It’s about seeing possibilities — and having the tools to bring them to life.

In music, creativity often begins with inspiration: a phrase that floats through the mind, a rhythmic idea tapped on the table, a feeling that demands expression. But without a way to shape that inspiration, the creative spark can fizzle out. That’s where music literacy becomes essential.

Music literacy gives form to inspiration. It helps musicians move from “I have an idea” to “Here’s what it sounds like,” and eventually, “Let me show you.” Whether it’s composing a melody, arranging a familiar tune, improvising with structure, or writing an entire score, the ability to read and write music allows creativity to expand — not shrink.

In this chapter, we explore how music literacy empowers students and adults alike to engage with music creatively: to compose, to arrange, to imagine, and to make music their own.

Creativity Needs Structure

There’s a common misconception that structure limits creativity. That if we teach students theory, form, and notation, we’ll somehow stifle their originality. But the opposite is true.

Structure doesn’t hinder creativity — it supports it.

Think of a poet: their words become more powerful, not less, when they understand rhythm, meter, and metaphor. A dancer becomes more expressive by knowing how to use space and timing. In the same way, a musician becomes morecreative when they understand the tools of composition — when they can read a musical phrase, manipulate its rhythm, alter its harmony, and build something new from something known.

Music literacy gives musicians access to:

Melodic development – creating and expanding themes

Harmonic understanding – choosing chords that reflect mood

Rhythmic variation – exploring feel and energy

Formal structure – shaping ideas over time (ABA form, rondo, etc.)

Notation and editing – writing ideas down clearly and refining them

These tools don’t replace creativity. They channel it. They allow musicians to take that small moment of inspiration and build it into something lasting and meaningful.

The First Composition: A Rite of Passage

One of the most powerful moments in a music student’s journey is composing their first piece. It might be short, clumsy, or even a little strange — but it’s theirs. That moment — when a student plays something they created from scratch — is often more empowering than any recital or exam.

Students who read music gain the ability to:

See how other composers think

Borrow forms, techniques, and motifs

Notate their own ideas clearly

Share their music with others who can perform it

Reflect and revise with intention

Imagine an 11-year-old writing a lullaby for their little brother. A teenager composing a piece to say goodbye to a close friend. An adult learner scoring background music for a family slideshow. These aren’t hypothetical — they happen every day in music studios and classrooms where students are taught to see music as something they can both interpret and create.

Without literacy, a musical idea can feel fleeting and hard to hold onto. With literacy, it becomes tangible — something you can return to, revise, and share.

Improvisation and Freedom Within Form

Creativity in music isn’t limited to composition. Improvisation — spontaneous musical creation — is a vital part of human expression, from jazz and blues to Baroque ornamentation, gospel ad-libs, and traditional folk melodies.

Some believe that music literacy stifles improvisation, that “reading players” can’t improvise. But this idea misses the point.

Improvisation and music literacy are not opposing forces. They are complementary skills.

When a musician understands form, key, harmony, and rhythm, they can improvise with clarity and depth. They can choose when to follow the rules and when to break them. They can hear a chord progression and respond with intention — not just intuition.

A musically literate improviser can:

Navigate chord changes more confidently

Shape solos with dynamic form

Play more freely in ensembles

Communicate ideas more clearly to collaborators

Transcribe and study solos they admire to deepen their vocabulary

In fact, many of the world’s greatest improvisers — from Charlie Parker to Oscar Peterson — were intensely trained in theory and literacy. They used their understanding not to limit themselves, but to push further.

Arranging, Reimagining, and Making Music Your Own

One of the joys of music literacy is the ability to take existing material and reshape it. Students who can read music are able to:

Change a song’s key to better suit their voice

Rearrange a solo piano piece for a duet

Add their own introduction or ending

Simplify complex rhythms or harmonies

Create versions of songs for specific events or people

This is creative ownership — not just repeating music, but reimagining it.

In a world filled with covers, remixes, and reinterpretations, the ability to rearrange music thoughtfully is both a practical skill and an artistic freedom. Music literacy turns a performer into a collaborator — someone who interacts with the material rather than just copying it.

This is especially valuable for teachers, students in small studios, and families making music together. The ability to adapt music to real-life situations, instruments, and emotional contexts is a gift that keeps on giving.

Creative Confidence Through Literacy

One of the greatest benefits of music literacy is not just the work students produce — but the confidence they gain in doing so.

When students see that they can write something down, that others can read and play it, that they can create something beautiful out of nothing — they begin to believe in their creative capacity.

That confidence spills over into other areas of life:

Speaking up in class or at work

Taking creative risks in art, writing, or problem-solving

Sharing ideas with peers

Seeing themselves as capable of originality and contribution

In a world that often values consumption over creation, music literacy quietly nurtures creators—people who think for themselves, imagine new possibilities, and bring ideas to life.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Composers

Many of today’s young composers and songwriters began their journey not in conservatories but in living rooms, practice rooms, and music studios where they were encouraged to read and write from the start.

Some of them will go on to write film scores, video game soundtracks, orchestral works, or original worship music. Others will compose for fun, for friends, for family milestones, or for healing.

All of them will have something in common: they were given the tools and permission to create.

That’s the power of music literacy. It doesn't promise greatness. It invites creativity. It says: “You can do this. You don’t have to wait for someone else to write the music you want to hear.”

Conclusion: Literacy as a Launchpad for Imagination

Creativity lives in every person. But it needs soil to grow in—structure, support, and skill. Music literacy provides that soil.

It gives aspiring musicians and lifelong learners the language and tools to express what they imagine, to compose what they feel, and to share what they create. It removes the ceiling placed by guesswork and opens up a lifelong playground of possibility.

Whether you are writing your first melody, rearranging a familiar tune, improvising over a chord progression, or composing for a concert hall, music literacy is the bridge between your imagination and the world.

"It is not the end of creativity.

It is the beginning."

In addition to private lessons, we offer group classes that help students understand music from multiple angles—how it’s created, how it works, and how it comes alive when shared with others. Below are three class offerings designed to support curious listeners, creative thinkers, and collaborative musicians.

Music Appreciation: Listening, History, and Musical Context (Ages 14 and Up)
Our Music Appreciation class is designed for students who want to better understand the music they love and how it came to be. Through guided listening, discussion, and historical context, students explore major musical styles, genres, and movements while learning how music reflects culture, innovation, and human expression. We examine influential artists, composers, and eras, discuss how genres evolved and influenced one another, and develop critical listening skills. This class supports all instrumentalists and singers by strengthening musical awareness, form, and style. Thursdays at 6:30 PM beginning February 5, 2026

Pricing: Open to the public for $49 | $29 / month for current LeGrand Music Studios students

Register Here

Music Technology: Songwriting & Music Production (Ages 14 & Up)
The Music Technology class introduces beginning to intermediate students to songwriting and music production through the lens of modern music technology. Students work with digital and analog tools including laptops, microphones, audio gear, and instruments while learning how ideas become finished recordings. The class blends lecture, group collaboration, and individual work time with guidance. Topics include the elements of music in production and recording, navigating digital audio workstations such as GarageBand, Logic, Ableton Live, and Pro Tools, drum and bass creation, building harmony and melody, recording audio, mixing, song projects, and Foley work for film and video. MacBook recommended - Laptop required (not iPads).

Tuesdays at 7:00 PM - beginning February 3, 2026

Pricing: Open to the public for $49 | $29 /month for current LeGrand Music Studios students

Register Here

Group Band Class / Music Ensemble (Starting 2026) Ages 13 -18
Beginning in 2026, our Group Band Class offers musicians the chance to play in a band with others at a similar skill level in a fun and supportive environment. This weekly, hour-long class focuses on collaboration, listening, and ensemble skills. Rather than learning parts in isolation, students begin to understand how their individual role fits into the full soundscape of a band. The class features a variety of familiar songs with a focus on rock and folk styles, helping students develop timing, communication, and confidence as group musicians. Thursdays at 6:00 PM beginning February 5, 2026

Pricing: Open to the public for $49 | $29 / month for current LeGrand Music Studios students

Register Here

Classical Guitar 101 / Group Class (Starting 2026) Ages 16+

Classical Guitar 101 is an introductory class designed for students who want to build a strong foundation on the nylon-string guitar.

How Music Literacy Helps Us Feel More Deeply and Express More Fully

Music is a language of emotion. Long before we learn to speak, we respond to lullabies, rhythms, and tones of voice. We sing when we’re joyful, hum when we’re anxious, and find comfort in the familiar soundtracks of our lives. But what happens when we go beyond just listening—and begin to read and write the language of music?

Music literacy doesn’t replace feeling—it amplifies it. When we read music, we’re not just following notes—we’re learning how to shape emotion into sound with intention. We gain the ability to explore what we feel, to understand what others have felt, and to express emotions we might not yet have words for.

In this post, we explore how music literacy enhances our emotional life, increases expressive range, and supports mental well-being—for children, teens, adults, and lifelong learners.

Understanding Through Expression

When a student learns to read music, they aren’t just gaining technical ability—they’re learning how to express emotion in detail and with depth. A written phrase can suggest a mood: gentle, intense, uncertain, hopeful. But it also invites interpretation. There is no single “correct” way to play with feeling—only a more honest or more thoughtful one.

This is where music literacy makes a difference.

A student who reads music begins to see patterns not just as sound, but as story. The phrase that rises and falls like a sigh. The rhythm that races like a heartbeat. The silence that speaks louder than a note. The markings on the page—like crescendo, legato, or fermata—become tools to shape emotional truth.

Just as a writer learns to express emotion through vocabulary and sentence structure, a musically literate student learns to express feeling through dynamics, articulation, tempo, harmony, and silence.

Reading music gives the musician choices, and with those choices, comes expressive power.

Emotional Safety and Emotional Risk

The arts give us a safe place to explore emotions—especially the complex or difficult ones. For many students, especially those who struggle to express themselves verbally, music becomes a channel for joy, grief, longing, anger, and hope.

Music literacy enhances that process. It adds structure to expression. It allows a student to explore not only how they feel, but how to express it clearly and meaningfully.

A soft dynamic marking becomes a whisper of vulnerability.

A syncopated rhythm becomes a pulse of excitement or disruption.

A sudden rest becomes a moment of internal reflection.

A shift to minor key expresses tenderness or melancholy.

A return to a major chord restores balance or hope.

This interplay between emotion and structure can be deeply healing. It helps students learn that feelings can be understood, shaped, and shared—not just endured.

And unlike verbal expression, music often allows students to say what they feel without having to explain it. This is especially valuable for children or teens navigating complex emotional experiences, or adults returning to music in moments of loss, transition, or self-discovery.

Music Literacy and Emotional Intelligence

Reading music isn’t just about what you play—it’s also about how you listen.

Musically literate individuals often become more emotionally attuned because they learn to observe nuance, respond to tone, and attend to subtle shifts in dynamic, color, and phrasing. These are the same skills that support emotional intelligence in everyday life:

Noticing tone and body language in conversation

Recognizing when someone is holding back or over-expressing

Sensing timing—when to speak, when to listen, when to pause

Building empathy by interpreting others’ creative expression

In ensemble playing, these skills are magnified. Students must listen deeply to one another, stay connected through timing and feel, and adapt their own playing to support the group. This creates an environment of mutual awareness, cooperation, and emotional sensitivity.

Personal Identity Through Musical Voice

Many students, especially adolescents, struggle with questions of identity and self-worth. Music literacy gives them a way to define themselves—not through comparison or performance, but through authentic creative voice.

When students learn to read and write music, they begin to understand how others have expressed themselves through sound. They also gain the tools to do the same. A melody becomes a journal entry. A harmonic progression becomes a reflection of mood. A piece of music becomes a personal signature—as unique as a fingerprint.

And unlike improvisation alone, which can feel exposed or overwhelming, reading and composing within a structure allows students to build their voice gradually, with support and clarity. They can return to the page, revise their choices, and shape their message.

Music literacy gives permission to speak—and the vocabulary to say what matters.

The Role of Music in Grief, Healing, and Transition

In moments of sorrow, transition, or loss, music often becomes a companion. It comforts where words fail. It gives shape to what feels ungraspable. And it allows people to process pain without having to narrate it.

When a student or adult can read music, they can choose what to play—and how to play it—in a way that matches their emotional state. They are not limited to the mood of a recording or reliant on memory. They can sit down with a score, find the right piece, and bring it to life in their own way, on their own terms.

I’ve seen students turn to music after the loss of a grandparent, during a period of isolation, or while navigating difficult family changes. Sometimes they don’t even talk about it. They just return to the music—again and again. Over time, their tone softens, their phrasing deepens, and a quiet kind of healing unfolds.

This process isn’t about performance. It’s about personal transformation. And it’s only made possible when the tools of music literacy are in place—when the student has the freedom to choose, read, and express at their own pace.

Cultural and Collective Emotion

Music also connects us to something bigger than ourselves. When we sing in a choir, play in an orchestra, or read through a score that’s been passed down for centuries, we tap into collective emotional memory.

A hymn, a folk tune, or a national anthem carries the weight of community history and cultural identity. Reading music allows us to engage with those traditions intentionally, to honor them with care, and to understand the emotional vocabulary of generations before us.

In many parts of the world, music literacy is tied directly to cultural storytelling. A Brazilian choro melody, an Argentine tango, a European choral mass—each contains not only artistic ideas but also emotional values rooted in the lives of real people.

By becoming musically literate, students don’t just consume music—they enter into its emotional ancestry.

Creating New Music, Shaping New Feelings

One of the most exciting outcomes of music literacy is the ability to create.

When students learn to read music, they also learn to write it. And in doing so, they gain the power to shape their emotions into something lasting.

A child writes a lullaby for their baby sibling.

A teen scores a short film or video game track.

An adult composes a piece in memory of a loved one.

A student struggling with anxiety writes a rhythmic pattern that expresses their internal world.

These moments are not abstract. They are real, personal, and often profound. Music literacy provides the scaffolding for these expressions—allowing emotion to take shape, be refined, and ultimately be shared.

Feelings are at the heart of music—but without tools to shape them, they can stay vague or bottled up. Music literacy gives people the freedom and clarity to express their emotional lives with depth, honesty, and intention.

It turns raw feeling into refined artistry. It transforms confusion into structure, chaos into beauty. It invites us not only to feel, but to speak through sound—to translate what’s within us into a form that others can understand and feel, too.

For students of all ages, learning to read music isn’t just a technical achievement. It’s a path to emotional fluency, a way of learning to listen more deeply, feel more honestly, and communicate more meaningfully—with themselves and with the world around them.

From early childhood to late adulthood, music literacy exercises the mind, sharpens attention, and nurtures critical thinking in a uniquely holistic way.

Whether a student is counting rhythms, decoding key signatures, tracking harmony, or reading two staves at once, the process of reading and interpreting music engages both hemispheres of the brain, connecting the visual, auditory, motor, and executive function systems in a coordinated dance.

The Developing Brain: Music Literacy in Childhood

Children who learn to read music are not just learning a skill—they’re developing mental habits that will serve them across every area of life. Reading music exercises a remarkable set of abilities, including:

Pattern recognition

Spatial reasoning

Short- and long-term memory

Auditory discrimination

Symbol-to-sound translation

Fine motor coordination

Multitasking and mental flexibility

A child reading a simple melody must interpret the pitch (which line or space?), decode the rhythm (how long is the note?), connect that to the physical act of producing the sound (which finger, which breath, which key?), and then track what comes next—often in real time. All of this occurs while following a beat, maintaining posture, and listening for accuracy.

It’s no surprise, then, that numerous studies have linked early music education with improved scores in language arts, mathematics, and executive function. But music literacy doesn’t just help with academic performance—it helps build the architecture of the brain itself.

Functional MRI studies show that children involved in regular, structured music learning—especially when it includes notation—develop stronger connections between the corpus callosum (the bridge between the brain's hemispheres) and show heightened activity in regions responsible for attention, memory, and decision-making.

Music literacy becomes an invisible form of mental cross-training: a playful, expressive way to develop focus, problem-solving, and resilience.

Sustained Attention and Mental Endurance

In a world of short attention spans and constant digital distraction, music literacy invites a different rhythm: concentration, persistence, and patience.

Unlike many school subjects, music demands sustained focus over time. Students must listen, analyze, interpret, and adjust all at once. They don’t just absorb information passively—they must apply it in the moment, again and again, often with immediate feedback from the instrument or teacher.

A student who regularly engages with music notation is practicing more than scales or songs—they are learning how to:

Sit with complexity

Break big tasks into small steps

Stay mentally present despite mistakes

Recover quickly and keep moving

Balance detail and big-picture thinking

This kind of cognitive endurance serves students well far beyond the music room. It’s no coincidence that many strong music students also develop strong study habits and time-management skills. In learning to read music, they learn how to learn.

Math, Language, and Music: A Three-Way Bridge

Music is often called a “universal language,” but it also shares surprising structural similarities with spoken languageand mathematics.

Reading rhythms strengthens a student’s sense of subdivision, ratio, and timing—all foundational concepts in math.

Understanding intervals and scales involves pattern recognition, sequencing, and auditory discrimination.

Following notation directionality (left to right, top to bottom) mirrors early reading skills.

Learning expressive markings and dynamics requires comprehension of symbols, vocabulary, and nuance—similar to literary interpretation.

This crossover is more than poetic. Studies have shown that music literacy programs that include reading and writing notation improve phonological awareness, vocabulary retention, and reading fluency in young children.

In bilingual or multilingual learners, music literacy has been shown to enhance cross-language processing and working memory. And for students who struggle with traditional classroom models, music provides a different path—a hands-on, emotionally resonant way to build the same skills in a different “accent.”

Decision-Making, Discipline, and the Prefrontal Cortex

While a math worksheet or vocabulary quiz engages logic, music notation invites a more integrated form of thinking. Musicians must not only interpret what’s on the page but also make constant decisions:

Should I play louder or softer here?

Should I slow down slightly?

How do I phrase this section?

Should I use alternate fingering?

What emotion am I trying to convey?

Each of these decisions strengthens the prefrontal cortex—the part of the brain responsible for planning, evaluating, and adapting. The act of reading music and responding to it in real time activates the same systems involved in executive function, self-monitoring, and emotional regulation.

In a world that rewards automation and instant results, music literacy encourages the opposite: intentionality, effort, and reflection.

Music Literacy and Cognitive Health in Adulthood

The cognitive benefits of music literacy don’t end with childhood. In fact, they may become even more important as we age.

Multiple studies have shown that lifelong engagement in music, especially activities involving reading and interpretation, may help delay the onset of cognitive decline and improve quality of life in older adults. Playing an instrument and reading music stimulates the same neural pathways used in speech, memory, and spatial navigation—functions that often deteriorate with age.

Even adults who begin music literacy later in life report improvements in:

Mental sharpness

Mood and emotional well-being

Dexterity and motor coordination

Sense of purpose and engagement

Music reading, especially when paired with regular practice, becomes a kind of neuroplasticity training—helping the brain form new pathways, stay flexible, and continue learning well into later life.

Personal Growth Through Mental Discipline

The cognitive benefits of music literacy are not limited to what we can measure in tests or brain scans. There’s something deeper—a personal transformation that happens over time.

Students who develop music reading skills often begin to:

Trust their ability to take on hard things

See failure as part of the process

Build persistence through repetition

Notice beauty in structure and detail

Take pride in self-guided learning

These are not just academic gains. They are character gains—skills and mindsets that prepare students for every part of life, from academics to relationships to careers.

In teaching students to read music, we are also teaching them to pay attention, to solve problems creatively, and to take responsibility for their growth.

A Silent Teacher That Keeps Giving

Music literacy isn’t noisy. It doesn’t always feel dramatic. But its effects are deep and lasting. Long after a student forgets the name of a piece or the specifics of a fingering pattern, the cognitive structures built through reading music remain.

The ability to decode information, apply it with precision, and reflect on it with nuance—that's not just musical skill. That’s lifelong learning in action.

Conclusion: Strengthening Minds, Not Just Skills

When we teach music literacy, we’re not just preparing students to perform—we are helping them build better brains, stronger attention, and more flexible thinking.

Whether a child is learning to read their first notes, a teenager is analyzing complex rhythms, or an adult is returning to music after decades away, the act of reading music activates, strengthens, and organizes the mind in profound ways.

The next time someone asks, “Why teach music literacy?” you can answer this way:

Because it’s one of the most joyful, creative, and effective ways to build a better mind.

Check in for the next entry in this blog series September 4th, 2025

Tomorrow marks something quietly extraordinary.

At LeGrand Music Studios, we’ll be hosting another student recital—a tradition we’ve honored for years. But tucked into tomorrow’s program is something that caught me by surprise when I realized it: performance number 1,500.

Fifteen hundred.

I didn’t think to mark number 1,000 when it passed, but this one feels different. Maybe it’s the way milestones hit when you’ve been walking the path long enough to look back and see how far you've come.

It’s been over 15 years since I started this music education studio—right here in Fountain City, in my home. I was working at Lowe’s at the time, polishing cooktops in the appliance section. One day, I caught my reflection and thought, “What am I doing?” Not long after that, I opened the doors to this studio, and slowly, one lesson at a time, it began.

After my son was born, we moved the studio to the Fountain City Art Center. In time, the studio itself followed. From there, things grew—not just in size, but in depth.

The number of performances isn't just a tally. It’s a symbol of time spent, friendships formed, and a community built around creativity and care. Students have come and gone, but many remain part of our musical family—whether they’re still taking lessons, teaching now themselves, or simply cheering us on from afar.

Our instructors are more than teachers—they're incredible musicians and dear friends. The families we’ve met are woven into the story of this place. And the Fountain City Art Center has become something more than a venue; it’s a hub of expression where music and visual art meet. As I write this, stunning photography by Phil Savage hangs on the walls—images that genuinely stopped me in my tracks.

Tomorrow’s recital will bring together students as young as four and as seasoned as their mid-70s, performing side by side among some of the most breathtaking photography I’ve ever seen. It’s a reflection of what we value here—art, community, growth, and the beauty of showing up to share something you love.

And sometime during the program, performance number 1,500 will ring out.

Fifteen years. Fifteen hundred performances. I’m proud of what we’ve built.

At the center of it all, there’s one chair—the solo chair. It’s where I began my own studies, and where students now take their place to offer not just music, but a piece of their heart. To sit on stage and share a song is an act of bravery, of expression, of becoming. That single chair holds countless stories, and tomorrow it will hold a many more.

Tomorrow will be a good day.
